Nottingham Light Night

During Light Night, Nottingham comes alive with an evening of entertainment, illuminations and late night opening of arts and cultural centres. The Old Market Square hosts a musical concert featuring Nottingham Music School groups, choirs and performances by young people of Nottingham. The event includes displays from stilt walkers, carnival characters and an impressive pyrotechnic and firework display, all of which can be viewed from Nottingham’s own giant wheel… more

13-16 February

Pancake racing at Blists Hill

The ladies of Blists Hill Victorian Town in Telford will be entertaining visitors with daily pancake races to celebrate Pancake Day. Although visitors can’t compete they can cheer on the participants who must all wear an apron and toss their pancake three times over the course, which starts at the New Inn public house and finishes at the Candle Factory… more

Taking to the skies for Valentine’s Day

The Black Swan Hotel in Helmsley, N Yorkshire, has launched Heaven and Earth packages designed to help couples mark Valentine’s Day in unforgettable style. BAC celebrates 100 years of aviation in West of England

On 30 July 1910, a Bristol Boxkite, piloted by Frenchman Maurice Edmond and built by the newly formed British & Colonial Aeroplane Company at Filton, took off from Larkhill in Wiltshire; home of the company’s first flying school. To mark this centenary, BAC100: 2010 launches a year of events, parades, rallies, competitions and children’s activities on a new website to be announced on the day … more

London

Chinese New Year in Trafalgar Square

A packed season of events across London marks the Chinese New Year 2010, the Year of the Tiger, which falls on 14 February. The main London Chinatown Chinese Association celebration takes place in Trafalgar Square, where two groups from China will perform dance, music and acrobatics after an official opening ceremony. Meanwhile, Chinatown will be bustling with special decorations, stalls, food and lion dance displays. Shaftesbury Avenue will become ‘Hong Kong in London Chinatown’ with a stage featuring performances by local Chinese artists. A fireworks display in Leicester Square will close the celebrations … more

All you need to know about scallops…

Scallops have long been harvested in the waters of Rye Bay and a festival takes place annually to celebrate the gourmet mollusc.  Learn about the sex life of scallops and how to cut, clean and prepare a scallop ready to eat, sample a six course scallop much more at this year’s festival celebrated by the town’s hotels, restaurants, pubs and B&Bs… more

Illuminating Hadrian's Wall

Hundreds of people from across the country and overseas will have the chance to take part in a once in a lifetime event this year when around 500 individual points of light placed at 250 metre intervals will be used to light up the Wall to mark the route of the 84 mile long Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail. The first will be illuminated at a public event at Segedunum Roman Fort at Wallsend in the North East, with the line of light then making its way along the Wall to Bowness-on-Solway in Cumbria over the following hour… more

Kielder Festival of Lanterns

The first ever magical lantern festival in Northumberland takes place this year at Kielder Water & Forest Park. During the day there’s a range of family-orientated music, art and dance workshops that celebrate cultural diversity and the heritage of Northumberland, as well as a lantern-making workshop for those who want to take part in the evening’s lantern-lit procession through Kielder Forest down to the shores of Kielder Water. An extravagant water-based finale will feature floating lanterns, water jets, screens and dream-like water imagery… more

Knebworth location for The Queen and St Trinian’s 2

Knebworth House in Hertfordshire was chosen for scenes in episode 4 of the Channel 4 production of The Queen, starring Barbara Flynn. The formal gardens at Knebworth doubled for Kensington Palace grounds, Knebworth’s ornate picture gallery became interiors of Buckingham Palace, the lavish library doubled for Windsor Castle and the elegance of Knebworth’s dining room became Kensington Palace. St Trinian’s 2: Legend of Fritton’s Gold was also filmed on location at Knebworth House and Balls Park in Hertfordshire … more
