This year’s National Enjoy England Awards for Excellence 2010 on St George’s Day, 23 April, will feature a brand new category: the ‘Where Else but England’ award. The public vote to find the most quirky and eccentric experiences in the country – whether it’s the Asparagus Festival in the Vale of Evesham or being a Farmer for a Day in Cheshire – has now drawn to a close. Two contenders from each region will go forward to the national finals – and the winner will be announced at the Excellence Awards in the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery and Brighton Dome Corn Exchange.

This issue of AngloFILE features a roundup of special ways to pamper mum on Mother’s Day plus the usual roundup of events, attractions, short breaks, accommodation, new openings, and much more.

Alice in Wonderland trail in Daresbury

With the Tim Burton version of Alice in Wonderland starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Stephen Fry due for release on 5 March, visitors to the village of Daresbury near Warrington can follow their own Alice trail in the birthplace of the story’s author, Lewis Carroll (aka Charles Lutwidge Dodgson). Characters from the Mad Hatter’s tea party are immortalised in a stained glass window in the village’s All Saints Church and by a granite and brass monument in Warrington. Even the brasserie at Warrington’s De Vere Daresbury Park has a looking glass theme – and the heroine herself is brought to life every October when a local school girl dressed as Alice greets visitors to the village… more
